THAI ACTION MOVIES

Under Thanin Kraivichian's government (1976-1977), Thai people were tought to be afraid of communism and that the way to survive was to protect the nation, the religion and the monarchy. This idea was present in many Thai films during the 1960s and 1970s (following the communist victory in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia). After the military coup in October 1976 made timely by the deaths of students in the Thammasat University Massacre, villains in Thai actions films (หนังบู๊) were communists, usually from Vietnam. Heroes were soldiers or members from right wing groups such as the Village Scouts (ลูกเสือชาวบ้าน). Popular plot was a secret policeman or soldier going to Isan to destroy a communist invasion. In the late 1980s, after the Communist party of Thailand collapsed, this plot became less popular.

The movie finishes with various shootings in which Sing's friends die, Seua dies and Sarawee dies by saving Sing's life against Kam Maen. Villagers are fighting against the traitors and the Thai flag is shown as the final image. The reds menace was present during decade 1960s in Northeastern region of Thailand. So such films were part of governmental propaganda. The movie is more than 2 hours and 20 minutes long. Some parts of the movie are missing and have been cut. Either they were in bad condition or Lepso Studio has to cut the movie to fit into a limited VCD format. There is no more original soundtrack as it is a 16mm movie. It is too bad as original songs are lost. Movie colors are wiped out.

Ruffians attack a bus and put fire into it. Hopefully military can help on time but some passengers die. Who was behind the ruffians? A local villager Chat is having financial difficulties. Nemana and Data, owners of the local sawmills, lend money to poor people with high interest. Chat bought a truck. He is close friend with Tai (Sombat Methanee), who is a village scout (ลูกเสือชาวบ้าน). The Village scouts was a right-wing group sponsored by the King and Queen of Thailand to promote national unity in 1970s. Villagers are helping each other. Due to debts (หนี้) Chat needs to give his rice fresh crop to Nemana. Poor (จน) people just work for the rich! Nemana gives him back the truck against his wife’s rice fields guarantee and allows him to cut trees in forest. He befriends with Prachan, who is Nemana’s close associate. Despite Nemana's promise, some other ruffians try to catch Chat so he has to fight back for his life. As he shots two men, he has to flee to Bangkok. They lie to him as the ruffians are not dead. He is driving a taxi in Bangkok. He gets framed by Prachan who puts drugs in his car (เล่นละคร) in order to increase Chat’s dependence to him as Chat needs to pay back his gratitude. He accepts to join their team. Nuan and Tai marry. Chat, due to easy money and lust, forgets his pregnant wife Bua (กรุงเทพสวรรค์คนมี นรกคนจน, คนลืมตัว). Back to the village Chat complains about the corruption of officials and how to benefit from it! Tai wishes to fight against this corruption that is bad for the country, fight against the bad parliament members. Tai and Chat disagree so fight (คนโทรยศแผ่นดิน). Nemana and Tai have a disagreement regarding rice selling. Tai pushes his democratic concept as villagers can sell to anybody (สหาย). It is democracy versus communism. Nemana proposes to share power and influence (แบ่งอำนาจ). As Tai refuses, they kidnap Nuan, his wife, who is teacher in order to force Tai to join them. Tai refuses their ultimatum and decides to act at nighttime. Faced to a Buddha statue, Tai prays in front of the Thai King and Queen pictures. Thai Buddhism, the monarchy and the nation were high symbols against Communism in 1970s. Patriotic songs are played in the background (รักชาติ). Tai has to use a floating wing similar to a hang-glider to enter silently their camp. He succeeds to release Nuan but they are captured while trying to escape from the camp. Chat's mother dies on a mine while trying to convince her son (คนขายชาติ) to release Tai. Through his treachery he loses his mother (สร้างกรรม). He changes side so frees Tai and Nuan. Chat dies while holding the Thai flag. Tai takes over the Thai flag. Meanwhile villagers holding Thai flags and singing patriotic songs go towards the camp. Thai army is joining them. The ruffians are defeated and some of them injured or killed. Through high compassion, soldiers give help and priority to treat them. Tai successfully removes the red (communist) flag and replaces it by the Thai flag generating cheers and dances. The song “Nak Phaendin” was released in 1975. It is was a patriotic song (เพลงปลุกใจ) against the communist influence (คอมมิวนิสต์). During 1975-1980 years, Thailand was surrounded by Communist countries (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam) and was at high risk to fall also. This movie from an historical point of view shows nicely this trouble period and how the government propaganda was done.

She suggests him to kill the organisation leader and gives him the building map. Sareuthai is later killed by the black panther due to her betrayal to the organisation. Cheutchai decides to enter in the building at nighttime but he is captured. Being joked on his qualification as Thai scout (ลูกเสือ), he punches back. Police arrives on time to rescue them. Cheutchai and Aranya neutralize the organisation leaders (ทำร้ายชาติ) at Don Meuang airport. In 1976 Don Meuang airport was still used for international travel. Aranya was in fact an uncovered policeman. This movie is a mix of action and comedy. The VCD includes two soundtracks. The second soundtrack in Isan language adds many oral jokes absent in the original Thai soundtrack. The movie features also a funky 1970s music soundtrack. It is produced by “Methanee film” company and Sombat Methanee is also the film director. It is a two hours movie.

Some action Thai movies (หนังบู๊) deals with gunmen. Hitmen ("MEU PEUN" - มือปืน) are often used in Thailand to get rid of journalists, activists, political opponents, business partners and even family members. Many stories relate Thai wives accused of hiring hitman to get rid of their foreign husbands. Gunmen are mainly from poor areas but some policemen or military men also become gunmen. Several hundred gunmen are for hire across the country, with most of them living in Chon Buri, Phetchaburi and Uthai Thani provinces.

Some ruffians put pressure on the newspaper editor to push Porn to stop investigating. Sia is the leader of the ruffians linked to Sophi. Sia hires Phet to kill his brother. Phet cannot do that and finally only the editor is shot in order to scare away Porn. Porn now knows his brother is involved. Sia sends ruffians to kill Phet as he cannot be trusted anymore but they fail. Sia's ruffians now try to kill Porn to stop the investigation. While rescuing his father, Porn is ambushed (วันนี้ตายแน่) but rescued by Phet. Sophi suggests to kidnap Yuwadee to catch the two brothers. Sophi plays men vs men (lawyer, Phet, Sia) using her charms. Porn needs Phet, the hitman, to testimony as a witness in order to accuse Sia. Yuwadee kidnapping fails thanks to Porn. The two brothers finally fight when they meet. Bad people pay for their sins as Sophi is shot by Sia and Sia is shot by Phet. There is a final duel between the two brothers and their father. Phet refuses to surrender to the police (ทำผิดต้องรับผิดชอบ) and prefers to die. Sorapong Chatree seldom plays the bad guy so it is interesting to watch this small low cost budget movie with a “Brother vs Brother” scenario, i.e. the good guy vs the bad guy even if Phet is only a bad guy forced by life circumstances (น้องมือปืน).

Tee Rifle is a hitman. He is shy with ladies. He likes to walk or run around Bangkok even passing by the Red Shirts barricades! As he is a hitman, he likes to wear wick to change his appearance. He has some sexual control issues with his little bird (ลูกพ่อ) when a beautiful woman touches him such as the gym dance teacher, Chris, whom he loves her secretly. He visits a doctor to get medicine but as the medicine fails and the doctor refuses to give back the money, he takes revenge over the doctor. The gym dance teacher has arguments with her father regarding green and purple clothes colors. Her father is the political leader of the Green Shirts. There is sarcastic irony and allusion from director Yuthlert Sippapak regarding the Yellow and Red Shirts fights in Thai modern politics. With Tee Rifle, the hitman symbol is demystified as he feels guilty each time (รู้สึกผิดทุกที่). Tee Rifle meets Chris in a bar and presents himself as Mark. Tee Rifle is hired for a new job. He shall shoot all the green leaders including Chris’ father. A second medicine fails to recover his little bird (ฉันไม่ใช่กะเทยแต่ผู้ชายโชคร้าย). Political leaders use violence. Win hatred with hatred. Is it the solution to political problems? Brown, purple, green political parties. All leaders are shot by Tee Rifle. The next job is to shoot Chris! The hirer is the wife of Chris' boyfriend. Chris was not aware that her boyfriend was married already! She still meets Mark at the same usual bar and a friendship starts. Tee Rifle shots Chris’ boyfriend to close the dispute! Thanks to a good friend, Chris is aware that Tee Rifle shot her father so she wishes to take revenge. Tee Rifle is recruited for a new contract. The target has rent a hotel for his birthday. Chris knowing that the hitman will act and so she enrolls herself as a coyote dancer to be able to catch him. Seeing Chris dancing lively, Tee Rifle has a control crisis and cannot execute his job. Chris now knows that Tee rifle and Mark are the same man. Following some shooting into impressive unfinished 1997 villas, Mark succeed to escape from Chris. Chris finally catches him in a Christian church. She spares his life not because of love but because Thai politicians are the real responsible. Thailand would be a better place without politicians so as a hitman, she shoots all Thai politicians leaders! This movie mixes comedy and action. It also gives a strong social message regarding politicians that are judged responsible of the current mess in Thailand (Yellow Shirts versus Red Shirts). It features a funky soundtrack. “Saturday killer” is part of a trilogy including “Sunday Killer” and “Friday Killer”.

Two versions of the movie were shot, one with Hong Kong Chinese star (กว่าง หลิน) as the leading actress for the international version and one with Petchara Chaowarat as leading actress for the Thai version. As Mitr died in an accident in 1970, an actor from Chayaphum province called Chat Chayaphum (ชาติ ชัยภูมิ) was used in order to finish the movie. Mitr also started playing in another Chinese movie จอมดาบพิชัยยุทธ (1971) but was replaced by another actor Luechai Natnat (ลือชัย นฤนาท). Lan Choo, her father and his guards are attacked in their home by a group of armed men led by another clan. Wai Chin (Mitr Chaibancha) saves Lan Choo (คู่รัก) but the father is left at his own fate. This is a trap and Wai Ching is captured. Phi Lun, who didn't die yet, helps Wai Ching to escape. Phi Lun helps as he wishes to kill Wai Ching by himself. Finally Wai Ching defeats Phi Lun again. Wai Ching flees thanks to Lan Choo and the two clans kill one another to get the salt mine. The movie includes flying acrobatic fights shot in Hong Kong's Sai Kung country park. It looks like a Chinese western spaghetti with a dark soundtrack similar to Ennio Moriconne movies. The VCD includes the international version so the old movie is in perfect condition. The VCD also includes 52 minutes of old damaged footage with Petchara Chaowarat playing Lan Choo.

Once again, Leu is ordered by his boss to form a mercenary team to stop drug propagation in Thailand and get rid of a dangerous drug lord, called Bad dog, protected by scores of tough men. It could be a "seven mercenaries" Thai remake. Six former soldiers join. Every team member has a reason to join, i.e. need 300 000 baht to cure a sick mother... They go inside the jungle. They are on unofficial mission so even the police and army can shoot them. They are mercenaries so they are employed for die. During the progression in the jungle two mercenaries die (through machete and acid bath). On the way, they help lost migrants including one lady with a baby. During the final face to face with the drug lord, all his teammates die. Leu would like to exchange his life (แลกตาย) with them as he promised that no team members should die. This is a typical 1980s Thai war movie with few interest. The action sequences are not credible enough. During the anti-communist years, movies with soldiers and mercenaries fighting in the jungle were popular. Most of these movies were low-profile, though some were popular as they played to the national sentiment. At the end of 1980s, when the communists were defeated, such action films faded.
