Some Thai romance movies deal about revenge. Some Thai movies deal about mistress or minor wife ("MIA NOI" - เมียน้อย). Often the main wife ("MIA KLANG" - เมียกลาง) get rid of the minor wife by killing her and force her to suicide. Then a family member of the minor wife will take a revenge against the main wife. Powerful and rich Thai men sometimes have a second but unofficial wife. The man supports everything for her, supports her children but in front of the society she is not recognised. Powerful and influential men don't divorce but can have unofficially several minor wives. As long as he takes care of all of his wives it is tolerated. Of course this is the Thai male point of view.

Middle age women give flower garlands (ดอกมาลัย) to the handsome main actor. Manager (ผู้จัดการ) Thongdam supervises the troop. Thongdam is fond of a young dancer called Maram but the love is not reciprocal. An old master is always teaching constantly the dancers and singers to look for perfection. Before representations actors pay respect to their master and spirits (ไหว้ครู). The two leading actors are handsome actor Boon Ek (พระเอก) and young lady Kathin (นางเอก). A high society young woman from Bangkok, called Waew, likes the handsome actor (เสียงดี - รูปหล่อ). She has a fiance called Prachalin already. Waew's father wishes to take Boon Ek to Bangkok to become a famous singer in nightclubs. Boon Ek refuses as he cannot leave his master but he falls under Waew's charm (ถูกเสน่ห์). It is the opposite of standard scenario as this time the rich lady seduces the poor man. The troop (โรงละคร) always moves from one temple to another. Beautiful representations with colorful costumes are shown. Manora (โนราห์) dance is like a bird dance. Waew brings Boon Ek to old style nightclub with singers and couples dancing. There is an opposition between traditional arts and modern songs, between Lakorn (ละคร) actors and Bangkok singers. A few beautiful 1960s romantic songs are featured in this two hours movie. Following a trip to Bangkok Boon Ek comes back drunk. He never missed a performance. His performance is a disaster (คนอะไร!) as he is too drunk. He has big hope (มีหวัง) for a career (ดารานักร้อง) in Bangkok and wishes for good money. Katin gives back to him her fiancee ring. The old master is very sick. Almost no spectators are paying to view the theather performances since Boon Ek left. The troop is out of cash. Vaew's heart balances between two men, her fiance and Boon Ek. The old teacher will not ask Boon Ek to come back (ยอมตายดีกว่า). Waew's fiancee, Prachalin, is a former singer and compositor. He prefers to lose Waew than a good singer! Thongdam is selling his own gold jewelry to simulate customers renting the troop. He even takes a life insurance (ประกันชีวิต) as he knows he is very sick. Waew doesn't love Boon Ek as he is a countryside guy. She is just having fun. Thongdam dies. He legates his money to the troop. To thank him, Malam decides to learn to dance to try to replace Boon Ek. Boon Ek is now a TV star (ดารา tv) and comes back to his province for singing. He declares his love again to Kathin through a song while she is the audience. She leaves the concert crying. He comes back during a lakorn representation and promises not to leave again. The Bangkok buzz is not for him. This is veteran actor Manop Aussawathep's first movie. It has a few similitudes with Cherd Songsri's movie Nora (โนห์รา) regarding traditional arts protection and conservation. It still features a very nice color picture for a 40 years old Thai movie. This movie was directed by the General Major His Royal Highness Prince Bhanu Yukol, a pioneering Thai filmmaker. He is the uncle of famous director Prince ChatriChalerm Yukol.

He loves singing Likay. Traditional peasant way of life, watching over buffalo, rice planting, getting fish from rice fields, ceremonies where young men invite girls they like to dance, Songkran ceremony with small pagoda made of sand are gracefully shown. They finally love each other with a promise in front of the local deities tree. But Riem family refuses this love story. Choi, local gangster, injures Kwan with his sword making a scar. This scar is the symbol of their love that nothing can break. Riem's father wants to sell her to the local gangster Choi. Riem's father is local "Kamnan" (กำนัน) but has many debts with Choi as he likes to gamble and drink alcohol. Riem is enslaved with chains. Kwan infliges a scar to Choi also but when he tries to free Riem, it is too late. Her father and Choi have brought her to Bangkok. There she is integrated to a rich Bangkokian family as she has the same face as their deceased daughter. A young man called Somchai is courting her. Riem discovers high society Bangkokian life with balls and European orchestra. The contrast is flagrant with village life and Kwan playing flute on his buffalo. Kwan arrives in Bangkok and searches for Riem. He cannot find her. He chases Choi to know where he sent Riem but during a sword fight, Choi is killed. Three years have passed. Knowing that her mother is sick, Riem goes back to visit her. Kwan has chance to meet Riem but Kwan also understands that she forgot him. He asks again for the support of the local deities. Riem misses her home and Kwan. She finally comes back as her mother is dying. In the past, her mother marries her husband for money in order to be secure but was never happy with him. So she advises her daughter to listen to her heart as love is more important than money. Riem promises to tell Kwan her decision in front of the local deities tree. On the same day, seeing that his father is getting older and older, Kwan promises him to honor his wish to see his son in yellow robes (ชายผ้าเหลือง) as a monk. Learning that Riem is forced to go back to Bangkok, he decides to help her but faces opposition from Riem's family and Somchai. Finally Somchai shot Kwan fatally and he drowns in front the local deities tree. Riem stabs herself and drowns with her beloved Kwan. Kwan's father will never see his son in yellow robes (ชายผ้าเหลือง) as a monk. Historically, Cherd Songsri's movie is a classic tale of star-crossed lovers and was one of the first Thai films to be a success internationally due to the precise representation of rural Thailand. It got Top award at Festival des 3 Continents in Nantes, France in 1981.

The musical movie “หลงเสียงนาง” is now very difficult to find in Thailand. It is easier to find a Cambodian copy (VHS tape only) than the Thai original version. In the Cambodian version, some songs are still in Thai language and not Khmer language! Many songs are featured including the hit “Long Sieng Nang” (หลงเสียงนาง). The movie scenario is quite similar to "Mon Rak Luuk Thung" (มนต์รักลูกทุ่ง), i.e. a romantic musical comedy. The movie director is Rangsee Thatsanaphayak (รังสี ทัศนพยัคฆ์). He directed around 100 movies! This movie features four veteran actors (Sawin Sawangrat, Somkuan Krajangsat, Prachuap Ruekyamdee, Nirut Sirijanya as Yot) and two veteran actresses, i.e. Monrudee Yamaphai as Chalita (ชลิตา) and Thitima Sangkapitak as Chontima (ชลธิมา). The main actor is seldom seen in Thai movies, i.e. Chokchai ChokAnan (โชคชัย โชคอนันต์) as he played in two movies only. Chokchai ChokAnan is a Thai country music singer, who became famous thanks to the song “หลงเสียงนาง”. This song was even adapted in Khmer language (ลา..ลา..ลา.....). Chokchai ChokAnan is half Thai and half Indian. He is playing character Nat. A car from Bangkok is arriving with two young ladies in the village. Yot and Nat, two close friends, tease the two Bangkokian ladies with their motorbike. Finally the two couples tease each other.
