THAI TEEN MOVIES
Teen Thai movies (หนังวัยรุ่น) are targeted for teenagers and university students. Teen films became a new popular genre in 1980s and 1990s in response to the new targeted audience of the shopping malls that have replaced old Thai cinema with one huge screen by major Cinema operator complexes having several screens. Also in early 1990s the invasion of American blockbusters saw most local producers attempt to attract the under-17 audience, where they felt they could still find a market. The result was a preponderance of teen comedy and teen action movies. Plots and themes often centered on the classroom. The young characters did not concern themselves with political activities that many university students in the period of 1970s were involved in. Those films are a sign that the student movement started to decline in power in late 1970s.

A new teacher (ครูใหม่) called Sirin (Jarunee Sooksawad) is recruited. She notices that two students always arrive late. One is a boy called Satit coming from a rich family (ลูกเศรษฐี). One is a girl called Kalaya coming from a slum family (สลัม). The movie highlights the importance to study for teens but also the importance for teachers to keep interest from their students (รักเรียน). This school has a strict director and strict teachers keeping the same program and activities without changes over years. Sirin tries to change this mindset. In Thai schools students show respect to their teachers in the mornign and evening (ไหว้ครู) and get hit with a stick (ลงโทษ) when they fail to obey to the school rules. Sirin faces opposition from the teacher head when she wishes to punish Satit for his bad behavior. Only the poor child Boonmee gets punished. Sirin wants to have same treatment for all children either rich or poor. A fight happens between Satit and Boonmee. Satit's elder brother, called Narit, comes to complain about the new teacher at the shool. He trusts Satit and doesn't know he is behaving badly. Kalaya has no time to study. Every early morning she has to deliver newspapers. Her father is always drunk and hit his wife. Kalaya is too ashamed to say why she is late everyday. Teachers decide to buy a bicycle for her so she doesn't have to run in the morning (same as movie Walli - วัลลี). Satit keeps stealing things. This time he steals teacher belongings and accuses Boomee. Hopefully Sirin is aware of the stratagem but Narit refuses to believe that his younger brother has problems as he is coming from a rich family. Money doesn't buy happiness... Kalaya didn't come to school since many days as her father sold the bicycle to buy alcohol. She now works in a construction site. Students decide to share the workload regarding newspapers distribution so that she can be on time in school. Following a brawl, Satit is sent to Police station. Teacher Sirin confirm (รับรอง) her students integrity so that they can be released. The school is going to take part in sport competition with other schools. They have big hope in cycling with Kalaya and Thai boxing with Boonmee. Poor children train hard while rich children just enjoy beach. Sirin sees Satit stealing the director's ring. She prevents the robbing but gets injured as Satit pushes her violently. The director doesn't believe Satit could be a robber. Losing trust in her director, Sirin resigns. Students refuse to study until Sirin is back. Finally Satit tells the truth to his brother. This one asks the director to recruit back Sirin. Sirin refuses to acknowledge the director's requests but accepts when students implore her. Competition starts. The school wins in boxing and cycling. Satit becomes a good boy. Despite strange cuts in the editing, this movie is full of good feelings, i.e. school importance, teacher dedication, studies, rich and poor society opposition...

Wattee is a university student. In a hurry as he has forgotten one book, he borrows Pla's bicycle. Some other students believe he intends to steal the bicycle. He needs to prove that Pla has given him the bicycle keys but Pla is sick for a few days. He is judged by university court of justice but he is saved by Pla just in time. A love story starts between Wattee and Pla but former Pla's boyfriend still wants to marry with her. His family and Pla's mother prepare a plan in which Pla's mother company is bankrupted. Pla has no choice than to marry her former boyfriend in order to save her mother and her company. Things end up well as Wattee is able to tell the truth to Pla before she leaves to England. This movie highlights the Thai modern society changes in which young people choose their mate by themselves and not following their parents' wishes anymore.

Students in class 650 are teenagers. They spend time to make jokes. Their new teacher (อาจารย์) Sri Nuan doesn't understand them and only blame them. So they often flee school and spend time in Siam Square. Teachers have difficulties to educate this class. Teenager Phong uses money from his school fees to buy music instrument and doesn't wish to pursue business studies to replace one day his father as the head of recording studio company. He doesn't go to school anymore. His father is upset. Phong stops going back home and spends time playing music. His grandmother, Pradit, who is also a teacher, blames his father for not giving enough time for his son. She knows the difficulties to teach teenagers. She asks Phong and his friends to stay and play music in her backyard so that she knows where they are. She asks Phong to create a song regarding Europe countries location with a modern rock music. It is an immediate success with the teenagers. They learn and have fun at same time. The grandmother is smart. She knows that teenagers need to study what they like in order to get better results. During a school outing, one of the children of class 650 saves another teen from drowning. The teacher Sri Nuan must acknowledge her mistake and that those kids have also a positive added value to Thai society. During the year end exams, the children of class 650 have very good results thanks to the songs of teacher Pradit. The songs start to be well known but Thai kids cannot buy them. Record producers including Phong's father are queueing for a contract but the group manager is the grandmother so she knows how to defend the kids rights and interests again the business vultures. Finally the father accepts to sign a contract to avoid a competitor to get the deal. They become stars now. Finally they come back to the school year end spectacle to perform. To the puzzlement of all, they perform traditional Thai music. Elders shall respect youth aspirations but youth shall also respect elders achievements as both of them have values. It is Amphol Lumpoon's first role.

This teen movie focus on local superstar Mos. It is related to students everyday life in secondary school, i.e. jokes over teachers, students in love with their teacher, students working hard including the typical intellectual with glasses always stammering, lazy students, end of year final exams and associated cheating tricks, dream of girls, their first cigarette and so on... But there is still respect to the father and to the Buddhist values. It focus on their aspiration, their dreams of a better future and their difficulties in recomposed families. It highlights that people who do not study have no future. Some student succeed through music, some through sport. Their motive is "tomorrow will be our day" (พรุ่งนี้จะเป็นวันของเรา).

Police catch the students and send them to reeducation centre close to the Burmese border. The most stubborn students escape and go along the border where they face death, suffering and the soldier eager to find who shot his girlfriend. There they understand and feel the pain they previously inflict to others. They decide they will change their behavior if they succeed to survive...
Most of the teenage movies are comedies, drama, actions or thrillers. Teen films are films that present the Thai teenage ways and of thinking, the relationship between friends and those between young adults and adults. Big music companies, such as RS Promotion and Grammy Entertainment used their young pop stars to be the main characters. Teen movies present only puppy love.

This movie is the third part of the movie serie "Wai On-la-won" (วัยอลวน). O (โอ๋) and Tam (ตั้ม) are now a happy married couple. O's father gets convinced to participate in a bus company business and has to buy shares. He needs to pay 200 000 baht. Tam is a nice husband but still likes to flirt with ladies and go for lunch with them. Sometimes he has a party with friends and his monthly salary is gone! He is so happy when he believes that O is pregnant but she has only a minor tiredness. O's father has given the money but didn't get any official reconnaissance papers as promised so got cheated (โดนโกง). Somchai, their relative (ญาติ) and domestic helper (คนรับใช้), gets biten by a fierce dog and has scars. The owner only gives 20 baht for compensation. He is the same guy who promises to sign documents regarding the loan from O's father. Tam asks for 200 000 baht compensation. Refusal is received and the issue has to be settled at tribunal (ฟ้องศาล). Tam enquiries to get proofs that the dog belongs to rich bad guy. Tam claims her relative was going to play in a movie to justify the important money amount. Trial starts but witnesses used by Tam cannot match the strong opposition from the lawyer. Family life go on for Tam and O. Tam buys a car. His musician skills are also well used in various occasions to play modern Thai music. Two songs from this movie became hits. His friends bring him to a massage parlor (อาบอบนวด). There he meets a masseuse that presents him a friend wishing to become a movie star. He convinces her to play her best performance during the trial if she wishes to get employed by his friend. It works so well! The movie highlights poor people fight against rich dishonest people. Piek poster movies reflects an image of Thai society with its good aspects and bad aspects. They are a joy to watch.

This movie is focusing on a poor Muslim community in South of Thailand close by the Malaysian border. A teenager boy, called Huyan, has to sell ice cream to help his father as his father is not rich enough to pay education for his three children. His teacher and his best friend, a girl called Mimpi, are sorry about this decision. The teacher asks Huyan to continue to pass this year exams as education is important for his future. He can sell ice creams in the school thanks to the teacher kindness. Huyan has one smaller brother and sister. He has no mother any more. Business competition is hard as other ice cream vendors have bicycles to go from one place to another but Huyan needs to walk. Her friend Mimpi goes to Malaysia but promises to come back. Everyday Huyan waits at the train station hoping for her return. He finally sees and goes to the Malaysian border with her as he forgot to exit the train. During the trip, Huyan meets other youngsters making a living by smuggling rice. Meanwhile his father is looking for him and gets hit by a train. He is disabled and cannot work anymore. The son has remorse. He has to take responsibility of the whole family. There is a swift change from the school protected environment to adult responsibilities. He helps to smuggle rice between Malaisia and Thailand. It is illegal as no taxes are paid on the rice. He has no choice based on family survival necessity (ความจำเป็น). To escape controllers, he has to go on top of the train wagons where youngsters risk their live if they fall. He has also to run away to escape the police. But he gets money and can send back his brother and sister to school. Following the tragic death of his friend, he decides to stop doing this illegal business and to sell flowers. Movie Butterfly and Flowers got Best Picture from the Hawaii Film Festival in 1986. It made only 5 millions baht in Thailand, most of that in Bangkok.

Two brothers love the same girl. One is hard worker and has stopped his studies. The other continues to study but is more interested in courting girls. Their father is sick and is sent hospital. The hard worker brother decides to participate to car robbing in order to pay the hospital bill. Things get worse between the two brothers when the father dies. Moreover the car robber wants to get rid of potential witness. Will the boy cope and see his girl friend again? This movie has won 4 Thai academy awards. It won the award for Best Movie of 1995 as well as being that year's highest grossing movie. The Romantic Blue used singer super-stars to play the hero and the heroine.

When back to our modern world, the princess size and jewels are reduced to doll size. Two warriors are sent to rescue the princess and they have only 7 days before the door gets closed. Back to our modern world, their size is also reduced to dolls and they face many dangerous issues (becoming pet fror chidren, giant cat...). Thanks to help of two teens, one brother and one sister, they are able to locate the princess and rescue her. This unbelievable story also allows their parents' reconciliation.

The Thai movie saga "Boonchu" is made of seven movies. Boonchu represents the Thai peasant attributes (timidity, modesty...) in a cheerful manner. Boonchu always speaks with a provincial accent. He was ordained as a Buddhist monk and successfully completed his studies in a temple. Every Boonchu movie was successful. It brought Bandit Ritthakol recognition as a director. In 2008, a new movie came as the series was celebrating its 20th anniversary. Boonchoke, son of Boonchu and Mo, is following in his father's footsteps by coming from Isan to Bangkok to attend university. Boonchu 3 and 4 were never made. As a marketing gimmick, the production skips them to go directly from Boonchu 2 to Boonchu 5.

All Boon Chu and Mo's friends are now parents also so their kids support Boonchoke. Boonchoke is chasing a young lady who stole his wallet. Same as his father he failed the first year exams as he helps this young lady chased by a gang. This opus 9 plays with nostalgia with participation of all former actors that played in Boonchu serie twenty years ago. It is adapted to modern movie style but still maintaining the atmosphere of earlier episodes with similar jokes from Boon Chu and his son, good-hearted country bumpkins. Boonchu 9 cleared 15 million baht over the first four-day period. This remake couldn't be the same without Jintara Sookkapat and Santisuk Promsiri as Boonchu.
