THAI HORROR MOVIES
Starting from year 1999 and "Nang Nak" movie, Thai horror movies (หนังผี) have increased their quality through a better scenario, higher budget and improved special visual effects. The advancement in cinema technology, the influences from Japanese and Korean ghost films have enabled Thai directors to transform traditional ghost stories in more frightening ways. Thai horror movies have become popular outside Thailand also. Thai horror movies still keep a Thai touch by including local culture and folklore but often include gory and scary sequences. A new generation of Thai ghosts, who no longer limit their haunting to cemeteries or villages at night time, has appeared. Many ghost movies switched their settings from villages to city environments. Older Thai ghosts tended to deal with those they were acquainted with in their former lives, i.e. their lovers, relatives, friends or enemies. But nowadays Thai ghosts kill anyone that crosses their path. Ghost women have become the voices of the many suffering women in society through topics related to abortion, rape and violence against women, prostitution and murder. While these women could not get justice in life when they were human beings, they could do so with the supernatural power granted by life after death. Recently a slight decrease can be seen in Thai horror movies due to the fact that both producers and directors are consciously trying to move away from this genre, which, while it has a long tradition, has been overly exploited. Horror movies have become the icons of contemporary Thai films.

The spirit ("PHI KRASEU" - ผีกระสือ) is a malicious and very dangerous spirit which manifests itself as a beautiful woman. It floats through the air because it has no lower body. It appears as a length of intestines suspended from a lovely woman face. A Khmer princess and her lover are sentenced to death by a Thai king. The Khmer princess is possessed by an evil spirit. Before dying, the evil spirit left the princess body to enter in a lady villager, who has just died and have same appearance. Her father and fiance are so happy that she has recovered but many people suspects she might be a ghost. During the night, "PHI KRASEU" starts to attack animals and then human beings. Monk help is required to get rid of the evil spirit.

Following an argument between two young women and a young man in a old house, one of the ladies fell accidentally from a balcony and died. To avoid problems with police, the body is buried and the mouth is closed with sacred thread. 25 years later a young couple, Mook and Ton, rent the house and mysterious events happen (snake apparition, horrible visions...). An older couple, who are the owner of the house, welcome the younger couple. A crawling ghost appear at night time. As she fell from the balcony, her back was broken, so the ghost can only creep. Three young guys selling Ya Ba try to rape Mook but the ghost protects her and chases the three bad guys, who are killed one by one. Finally the older couple recognizes their involvement in the accident 25 years ago. It looks more a telemovie scenario than a real horror film.

Before long all three are subjected to a series of bloody manifestations, courtesy of an angry and vengeful spirit determined to collect what is owed.

Prets (เปรต) are creatures that suffer as a result of their bad deeds in their previous lives. They are portrayed as extremely thin and tall. Their mouths are as small as a pinhole so they are always hungry as they cannot find enough food to feed them. They are moaning loudly out of intense pain and suffering. This movie takes place in the 1800s. A "pret" ghost is seen by villagers at night time. The "pret" ghost killed a few villagers doing bad deeds such as robbing Buddha statues in temple or removing gold foil from Buddha images. Beung, a young man, believes the "pret" ghost manifestation is linked to the finding of an old Buddha statue. Beung is also fond of Samri, the daughter of the village headman. A local landlord comes to the village to evaluate the old Buddha statue. He also gets interested in Samri. With the help of the village headman, he decides to rob the old Buddha statue to sell it to a rich collector. The temple abbot is killed and Beung is accused of the murder. while bringring the statue back home and Beung to prison, the landlord's team is defeated by the "pret" ghost.

Nowadays modern Thai horror movies mostly take place in cities and are often linked to spirits (วิญญาณ) looking for justice. In many Thai horror films, there is clash between past and present. The film was controversial because the setting closely matched that of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, where the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, tortured prisoners. The film outraged Cambodians and calls were made to ban all Thai products.

Pregant Prae marries Pong. Pong was not in hurry to marry but he has no choice. They stay at Pong's mother home. Benn is Pong's sister but following the tragic death of her husband (burnt alive), she has lost part of her faculties. Tragically Benn dies also in a fire accident and Prae, shocked, has an earlier baby delivery. Their new son never stops crying up to the point the relationship between Prae and Ping gets tense. A doctor suggests a colic symptom but after three months the baby is still crying. A monk suggests to closely care about the baby until he is one year old. Mysterious events happen in the house. It looks like somebody else is living there also. It look like the baby is afraid of something but cannot speak. Can the baby see ghosts? Is the baby autist? Many possibilities are investigated by Prae. Prae escapes to a mortal accident thanks to the warning cries of the baby. Unfortunately Pong's mother dies in a traffic accident. The monk analyses that the baby fright is linked to his bad karma and to the very bad actions he has done in his previous life. The one year deadline is an important event to be reached. Serious accidents happen to Pong and Prae. On the first year birthday eve, spirits get wild to kill the baby. Finally the family stays safe and it is known that Benn's husband was an officer who is responsible of the death of 5 students hanged during the student street demonstrations. His spirit has been reborn into Pong and Prae's baby.

The action takes place around 1930's. Nuanchan is looking for her husband, who has disappeared one year ago following a business trip. She arrives in a old traditional Thai wooden house where he is supposed to have stayed. She is pregnant. The house supervisor, Somjit, allows her to stay but told her not to go in the main building house as it is forbidden as the house ruler, Run-juan, doesn't want to be disturbed. Choi, a domestic helper, mentions she has never seen the house ruler face. Every fifteen days, food is offered at the spirit shrine and she saw a hand grabbing food... Nobody dares going out at night time. There are also rumours about a lady with long hairs who hanged her-self in the garden. Nuanchan misses her husband but mysteriously his face is never shown. Nuanchan delivered the baby. Choi wants to bury the birth remains in the soil as there is an old belief that the spirit "Phi Kraseu" (ผีกระสือ) will eat such food at night time. The house ruler Run-juan has lost her husband and there are rumours she is bringing a lover at night time. The house ruler Run-juan wants to take care of the baby as she never had the occasion to have a baby before. Choi disappeared. One day Nuanchan finds her husband in the garden. He is not able to tell the whole truth but he is staying with the house ruler lady and asks Nuanchan to leave for her own safety. Finally truth is known. Chob is in fact the house ruler lady's husband, who had an infidelity with Nuanchan. So Nuanchan is the mistress! Afraid to loose him, the house ruler lady stabbed him to death. Somjit, seeing the event, fell from the stairs and died. Choi is also a ghost. All people are ghosts. Nuanchan also is a ghost as she hanged her-self before but she still refuses the truth so continues to come to the house to search for her husband. Even if the third movie of Wisit Sasanatien was not as colorful as two previous works, he received a lot of praise for the homage given to films of the 1930s.

Young woman Ting is learning acting. Police asks her to play a lady who is killed in an attempt to re-enact a crime scene. She is concerned to irritate spirits by playing dead people but police mentions it is for good purpose, i.e. catch the killer! She has to play Min, a lady who was recently killed. Ting visits Min's best close friend Fai. When playing Min, Ting has visions and discover that Fai is the one, who killed Min. Finally the movie stops and all the story was a movie inside the movie. The young lady is called Nong Mae. All the main participants involved in the movie shooting are killed one after another. Even Nong Mae behavior has started to change when she starts to wear a tiara given by an unknown person. She investigates what the spirit is looking from her. While on the set filming the movie and in real life, Nong Mae seems to be possessed by a spirit...

Ping wishes to become a musician. He becomes a student of Master Duang, a famous master musician. Master Duang owned the mysterious drum called Peung Mang, which is said to have been made by the skin of a beautiful woman named Thip. Ping falls in love with a beautiful girl who teaches him how to master drum skills but she is in fact the ghost leaving inside the drum. Meanwhile, an arrogant musician called Muan tried to convince all the students to leave Master Duang. Some students died horribly. Even if Muan is defeated by Ping during a drum contest, things get worst and the drum becomes not only an instrument of music but also an instrument of death.

Based on a true story, supposed to have take place in a place called Kamchanod, Dr. Yuth is obsessed with finding the truth behind a newspaper report on an event in which film projectionists have been hired to screen movies for ghosts. Dr Yuth's girlfriend suffers from his obsession and wants to leave him. Two senior journalists who believe they could get journalistic fame if they uncover the whole truth take part to the enquiry. Finding the movie tapes and watching them, all of them start to see ghosts and start to loose their sanity, if not their lives. Dr. Yuth venture into Kamchanod in the hope of finding out the truth. The supernatural then merges with the reality.

Pim and Ploy were Siamese twins. Ploy is dead many years ago following a chirurgical operation as Pim wanted to be separated from her twin sister. Many years ago, Dong met Pim and Ploy. He fell in love with Pim. Ploy was jealous and tried to break the relationship. Pim was so upset that she decided to get split from her twin sister. Dong learnt later that the reality is more frightening. Ploy, in fact, killed her sister and took her identity. She became Pim. Once Dong knows the truth, he breaks up with her but Ploy tries to erase and kill everything related to Pim. First her own mother, then Dong... It was first film role for Thai pop singer Marsha since 15 years.

Ae and her brother, Chon, are living alone together. The sister is studying medecine. The brother has always frightening visions of chopped body parts. He also sees a deformed black cat and a walking fetus. He starts to mix reality and visions up to the point, he almost strangles his sister. He has an hypnotism seance with her and starts to better see his dream, including a lady whose face is blurred and somebody who is chopping a feminine body. Dr. Usa understands there is connection between Chon, herself and her distant husband, Dr. Sethee. She also discovers her husband had a love affair with a university lecturer, Dr. Dararai. Chon comes to believe that the woman ghost is sending him messages through his nightmares. Finally, thanks to some clues in his nightmares it leads Chon to a morgue where a mysterious corpse number 19 is lying... The corpse is Chon him-self! Finally there is a double personality problem between Dr. Sethee and Chon. They are the same person. The ghost of Dr. Dararai had a baby in the womb. She was a former mistress of Dr. Sethee. He killed her and chopped her body because she threatened to blackmail him if they break up. The ghost is using the double personality of Dr. Sethee by having one personality to enquiry on the other in order that he shall be condemned for his killing.

A doctor killed his wife-to-be Tawan with the support of nurses. He is selling the corpses. According to Thai old beliefs, after 7 days, if the corpse is not cremated, the spirit will come back to find the ones it used to love and the ones who hurt it. The spirit is now coming for revenge as the 7 days are passed and the corpse buyer is late. Using beautiful and sexy nurses is not enough to have a good scenario even if there is some "originality" on the murders (no respect for already dead people, murder of a pregnant woman...). There is a visual feast of colors with gory, gruesome and bloody sequences as the spirit takes revenge on the nurses and the doctor. There is then a surprising revelation that Tawan is not a real lady...

A young Thai man, Chris, and a young Hong Kong woman, Sue, decide to go through this ritual. Chris does it in the hope of saving his Japanese fiancee who is dying of terminal cancer. Sue does it to save her own life after being diagnosed with a brain tumor one week before her wedding with Jack. After the ritual, Chris and Sue experience some miracles in their respective lives. Soon they find themselves confronted by a series of scary events. Chris always see a woman and her baby. She is his ex-girlfriend who died along with her child. Sue learns that her fiancee is dead and gets haunted by him. Sue consults an expert in the paranormal and later Chris to try to solve her supernatural difficulties. Chris and Sue decide to go again a last time through the ritual to reverse the wheel of Karma...

He is always without money and has recently broken with his girlfriend Som. Pushed by a friend Peoll, Chen allows making an illegal shooting of the movie for the local mafia to sell pirated VCD. Chen starts to have scary visions about Chaba. It seens she has crossed over to the real world. Peoll disappears and Chen sees him dead in the movie. Som decides to help Chen. They try to find Chaba's old house in order to give proper funeral to her dead body. But Chaba is not dead. She is staying in a home for elderly people . Chen, finding a hidden cut tape, realizes that the actress really dies during the movie shooting. All those who watched her death shall die, including Peoll and Chen... Be involved in VCD piracy can bring serious trouble...

The air hostess was a lover of the princess' husband. The spirit is seeking to clean up the affront...This is the scariest story.

This movie is in fact a prequel to the 2005 Art of The Devil 2. A family was having happiness after the birth of a son and a daughter. The father used a woman teacher, Panor, to help his son during homework time. The teacher became the father's mistress. The mother, Deuan, died by suffocating but in fact she was poisoned by her husband. The grandparents have kept her body. By using a man expert in black magic, they transfer the spirit of Duean inside the body of Panor. The expert in black magic is rotten inside and is looking for a three-eyed devil magic to cure him-self. Duean, after being dead for 13 years, still has visions and can see spirits around her. She doesn't accept her new body and wishes to take revenge on her previous family. She kills them one by one through usage of black magic despite the attempt of the expert to stop her. A monk provides her advice that she will get peace as she is still using black magic.

Bout is a lady selling Thai noodle soup. Her life is full of sorrow, sad and bloody events. She has one young crippled daughter called Bua. When Bout was young, she was mistreated by her mum so has now sequels. Bout was raped by her father forcing Bout to marry early as she was pregnant. She had also a bad unfaithful husband who had debts. She killed him and her mistress as they try to drown her daughter who spied them together in the bedroom. The events happen during 1973 Thai student uprising historical events. A corpse is found in her cart as a student hides inside and receives a lost bullet. To get rid of the corpse, she chops it inside her noodle soup. It gives a delicious taste. She meets a young man that is looking for his missing friend. A love story starts. There is a strong analogy on flesh during lust and on bloody flesh used in noddle soup... A debt collector always bothers and threatens Bout to get paid relating old debts from her former husband. One evening she kills him and uses his flesh in noodle soup also. The young man understand after a while why she stockpiles sedatives from his pharmacy. She uses sedatives to put to sleep her victims before chopping them. He discovers Bua's body in a big jar. In fact Bout is crazy as Bua is dead since a long time already. Bua is only alive in her imagination. The young man sends her to police but without tangible proofs, Bout cannot be arrested. She is released and is looking for revenge over her former boyfriend and his new girlfriend. She kidnaps the girlfriend in her bloody cellar containing so many corpses... Main actress is famous Thai pop singer Mai Charoeunpura. Her performance is so striking that the pity over her sad life surpasses the horror due to her bloody killings. The film has been cut by Thai censors as the censors worried the film story could jeopardise the popularity of Thai noodle soup! The original Thai title was ก๋วยเตี๋ยว เนื้อ คน meaning "human meat noodles". The Thai title has to be changed to เชือด ก่อน ชิม meaning "carve before tasting".

The movie starts with a strong opening. A middle age man gets suicide. A photo journalist, called Dao, takes pictures of a business arguing between two men. One man is shot. As Dao has seen the scene, she is also shot. But Dao is safe with no injuries. Her father just died. He is in fact the man who commits suicide. In the hospital morgue, her father wakes up and is sent to reanimation room. Strange night for Dao with two dead peope who finally wake up (ตายไม่ได้ตาย). The father killed his wife as she was suffering in terminal phase. Dao didn't meet her father for 15 years as she never forgives him. Wout is a policeman who is supporting Dao. Some journalist friends talk to her about lost spirits (วิญญาณ) that are wandering around refusing to die, refusing to be born. Dao is enquiring on those mysteries but a hitman is also chasing her regarding the embarrassing pictures she took. She then understands that her father died for her instead of her. Unfortunately the hitman finds her...

Same as Mae Nak story, she is a ghost looking for her husband but Ken is not aware. She disappears mysteriously when Koi arrives. The paparazzi finds than Mem ghost image is surimpressed on many pictures he took. Frightening incidents happen. Mem causes Koi to have a deadly car accident. The paparazzi warns Ken's producer as Ken is not willing to listen to anybody after Koi's tragic accident. The paparazzi dies. The producer is also killed. Mem also causes Ken to have a car accident. As he apologizes (ขอโทษ) sincerely and claims his true love to Mem, the ghost forgives and spares his life. Finally as Ken continues his butterfly behavior, he falls with his new girlfriend from his condo to his death. Mem was also responsible of Min's death. This movie highlights the paparazzi bad practices and is a gory warning to butterfly men.

A group of robbers escapes from police and hides money in a haunted apartment. It is in the room 609 where Rahtree, a lovesick ghost, lives with her handicapped boyfriend. She has cut his legs to prevent him to flee. Frightened by the ghosts, the robbers flee but come back with a psychic to face the ghosts. Meanwhile, the handicapped boyfriend has given the money to a blind young girl to pay for her hospital fees to recover her sight. This causes Rahtree's wrath...

The Buppha ghost saga continues with two new opus in 2009. In 2009, Buppha 3.1 and 3.2 were released. Lang, a teenager, can see ghosts since he is a child. He breaks up with his girlfriend as she is fed up with those ghost stories. Then he moves to a new place, the old factory building where Buppha used to live. In parallel, a little girl is always teased by her schoolmates. She fell in the stairs. When she wakes up, she is not the same. Buppha spirit is reincarnated in her body. She goes back to the building where she lived in Buppha 1 and 2. She then goes on rampage on the building residents by frightening them or killing them. Bupha either do her killings in the body of the little girl or inside the body of Buppha. In the building, there is an underground illegal casino. The comical psychic (หมอผี) Master Kong, who is now running for governor of Bangkok, tries again to chase Buppha spirit away but as usual fails. Lang meets Buppha and recognizes her as the teacher, who helped him a few years ago. He is fond of her. Nowadays Thai horror movies are either comedy comic oriented or scary oriented but Buppha is a unique mix of Thai comedy and gory horror. In such modern horror movie, ghosts are not afraid of Buddhist incantations (maybe related to numerous modern scandals in which monks were involved so they lost some respect from people and ghosts also) and especialy when those incantations are said with a hip hop trend!

The Buppha ghost saga continues with two new opus in 2009. In 2009, Buppha 3.1 and 3.2 were released. Buppha was the teacher when Lang was a kid. Lang still wants to meet Buppha again. He knocks at room 609 but she is not willing to teach him again (ไม่สะดวก). Police arrives in the building and enquiries on the bodies found in the underground casino. They see a jumping embalmed corpse and flee. A Hong Kong police officer is coming to help. Lang stays in the factory building because of Buppha. There is identification between Buppha and the little girl. The underground casino den is still opened. More comic customers are coming. Police comes again with the support of monk Luang Phi Teng (หลวงพี่เท่ง). Luang Phi Teng is the main character from "The Holy man" movie, which was a top hit in 2005. Luang Phi Ten is giving blessing to the police (ให้กำลังใจ - รับพร). The monk is entering the building with them. The police wishes to capture the little girl ghost but she continues her killing rampage with the policemen. The monk and remaining policemen flee also. The embalmed jumping corpse is now inside the casino den. Afraid customers are fleeing and leave their money behind. A Chinese customer uses a Chinese baby spirit (กุมารทอง) to get back the money. The Chinese spirit is not as strong as the Thai spirit and gets smashed. Lang loves Buppha, who is already dead. His soul (วิญญาณ) is gone to search for Buppha. A monk brings him back to human world. Despite advise from monk not to go to the building again, Lang flees from hospital to meet Buppha. A new exorcist master (อาจารย์) from Cambodia goes to room 609 in the building. They are all killed. Finally a traditional hermit (ฤาษี) with his hunchback is brought by Lang's friends. The comic hermit has difficulty to fight against the strong spirit (ของแรง). The father is burning (เผาศพ) the body of his small daughter causing the killings to stop. Buppha Rahtree 3.2 continues the same recipe including an unique mix of Thai comedy and gory horror. It is more fun than Buppha 3.1
