If you check on Internet, you can find Songthaew, SONGTAEW, Songthaw. It depends on the Thai characters transcription used. I will change to Songthaew as letter ถ is in initial position. More details at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Thai_General_System_of_Transcription

I once watched a cat at a roadside food stall, trying to catch jinjokes who were attracted by the bugs by the lights.<br>It pounced on one, who promptly lost its tail and ran away leaving the cat distracted with the lizards now detached, but still twitching tail! these guys are awesome and the tookgae is really loud at night, but you usually have to be out in the countryside to hear them

Awesome page, thank you for all the information. I lived in Thailand from 1989-1994 and used to see water buffalo within Bangkok city limits (behind the modern subdivisions in the remaining farms).<br>Now when I go back, you can't even hardly find buffalo even in the countryside! I am glad that there are efforts to restore this wonderful animal to Thailand and especially on farms. I hope one day to own my own ranch in Thailand and raise these guys. I do have to say, though, that 'kwai' or buffalo is NOT the worst insult in Thai. That belongs to another one of my favorite Thai animals, the water monitor lizard. I will not repeat the slang term for that animal here, but if you know Thai, you know what I am talking about :-P

This would be inauspicious thing to do - if not also forbidden by Vinaya. You must buy white cloth to do this not use the real yellow robes of a Bhikkhu. The masterLuang Por Cha, as a child, wished to be a monk froma very early age and used to put on a white sheet as the robe to play at being amonk. This is because it is culturally forbidden to wear the robes of a Bhikkhu if one has not undergone the ordination ceremony. This is also the reason why the Nak wears white until having recieved the full ordination as a Bhikku from the upachaya

Sammy, Is it really mind boggling to understand why people are 'up in the air' about women being forced into prostitution due to absolute desperation, or by despicable human beings who have no regard for human rights? And are these children really having a 'good time' when they are forced to have sex with up to 10 men per day? Did you actually read this report? It is mind boggling to me that there are people like you out there who are so deficient in common sense and intelligence that they air their warped views in public.

Why everyone is up in the air over sex is mindboggleing. What is happening is that people are simply using what God has given them for economic reasons. All other finger pointing is from some made up morality of which there is no beginning. Just some people wanting to control others and get mad when others are having a good time. It sure makes people think of themselves as superior to eveyone else and let's them look down their noses at others. All ego and angst.

Nice and all, really I still do not understand why Thai people have so many contradictions and feel they are so perfect. Pffff what big egos they cary around, and then they say they are Bhuddist?? A big joke if you ask me, they changed bhudism to their own way so that it is more useful to their culture. I hope to see a normal Thai person one day, In Thailand or abroad, but they all very stubborn and have big ego's, best is to remember this when you want to beat them / have a conflict with them and want to win. trust me thais are more Jai rohn then any other poeple on this planet.

Hi Ron, in Thai houses, there is often a room reserved for the Buddhist altar. On this altar, there are Buddha statues, Buddhist amulets. Thai people never buy Buddha statues but rent them. Pictures of the Royal Family are also present. Flowers are present and offering are done on Buddhist holy days (Wan Phra around once a week). You need to have a Buddhist calendar to know the exact days. It is a very good comment. I will add an update to the website.

Hunju, If you are located in Los Angeles, you can go in an area called "Thai town" or the Thai 77th province as many Thai people live there. You certainly can find Thai movies there. If not you can also purchase movies online. They are some links in ThaiWorldView website horror movies section that allow you to buy some movies. Beware that not all Thai movies DVD have subtitles. Let me now your progress and if you find interesting documents or books. Try also http://www.thaiworldview.com/library/lib9.php

Dear Michael, You can perform some Thai Buddhist ceremonies to alleviate your grief. You can perform prayers in front of her urn that should be in a Thai Buddhist temple if her parents have decided to keep ashes. After One hundred days after the decease, a Buddhist ceremony is done in order to perform final prayers. It is called "THAM BUN 100 WAN". Monks are invited to perform prayers. Offerings and money are given to Buddhist monks. Ceremony "SAT NAM" is also performed. It is the action of pouring holy water on the floor to give strength, good deeds to spirits and it helps them to shorten the time to wait for next life. It can be done in your own country in a Thai Buddhist temple. In Thailand, normally monks come at home. Then you can do it every year on the day of the decease.
* Sat, 21 Nov 2009 15:31:30 GMT by Admin
Dear Michael, first receive all my sincere condolence for the loss of your loved one. I have discussed with my Thai wife about your case. As we lack some information, it is only hypothesis. - Are you sure her family understood well you were on the way? Did they speak English or did you speak Thai? - The dead body can be cremated between 3 to 7 days. The formalin used to reduce body decomposition is expensive for poor people. It could be a reason not to wait for 7 days if her family was not wealthy. - Maybe it was a contagious / misunderstood disease that forces her parents to hurry up the cremation.

Hunju, the source are my own sources. I am very interested in Thai culture and Thai society so I love studying movies, TV series, books, photographs, newspaper articles, history, research papers regarding Thailand. I have all those movies in my Thai movies collection. You can read more at http://www.thaiworldview.com/tv/cinema6.php . บ้านผีปอบ means the house of ghost Pop. A ghost Pop is an evil spirit believed to posses a person to eat his intestine while also forcing him to seek and consume raw animal organs and meat at night-time. นางพรายตานี means Mrs Ghost Thani. She is a ghost living in a banana plant tree. แก้วกาหลง are the names of the main characters in this movie, Kaew the slave and Kalong, his master's daughter. ตะเคียน คะนอง means Takhian Khanong. TAKHIAN spirit is located in hopea odorata trees. Read more at http://www.thaiworldview.com/bouddha/animism7.htm .

Also, what can I do personally to rectify this feeling of emptiness, this feeling of unfinished business so to speak that I did not end the cycle with my Beloved Fiancee with the Funeral Ceremony. Its almost as if it is not quite over for me personally. Although I do understand that it is never really over, however I rhink you know or understand the meaning of my question. I have no "closure" as they say in the West, I suppose, something like that.
* Fri, 20 Nov 2009 22:51:55 GMT by Michael
My Fiancee from Thailand passed on recently. The family did not wait for my overseas arrival and in fact cremated the body in 2 and a half days. What is thje reason for this? Moreso, they did not tell or want to tell the rest of the village my Finacee had passed away. I feel cheated, left out and in/unsecure that I will never see my fiancee again. I did not get to say my final farewell nor hold her loving gentle hand. blow a kiss nor wave goodbye. Why would the family move so quickly to cremate the body and it seems most of my fiancees belongings. I do not understand this as they knew i was on the way and it seems to be totally against what i have been told and what is written above. No photos of the cremation where taken i have been told. Another anomilly. Can anyone enlighten me.

Visited in 08 and found that the traffic from Bangkok to Pattaya was at a stand still. It took us 3 hours just to get down the last stretch of road that would normally take maybe 30 min. Don't be in a rush if you are trying to get somewhere! It was a fun experience though and we were never bored!

Loi Krathong 2009 falls on November 2, but the festivities start a few days before that. Chiang Mai is imho the best place to experience Loi Krathong. However make sure you book ahead because the best hotels will be fully booked during Loi Krathong. Found a website that lists hotels with rooms available during Loi Krathong 2009, check it out: http://www.chiangmaispotlight.com/index.php/loi-krathong-accommodation/

Interesting that this article blames as usual, foreigners and corruption. How shallow and superficial this article is. If you look at the history of Thailand prostitution first goes back to the 1600s, when it was sanctioned by the Thai royal court of the time. I have lived in Thailand for some time, and we all know that prostitution is a regular scene on most streets, from massage parlors, to karoke bars, and go-go bars. It is expediency to blame foreigners, or corrupt officals. Lets look at the real problem which is that there is a ready market for sexual services in Thailand. Why is this? Perhaps because of the economic and social inequality afforded women.

Many Thai movies are exceptional: Bang Rajan, Ong Bak, Naresuan and Suryothai are good examples. However, subtitles or English language tracks are seldom available or are very poorly made, often making no sense what so ever. The movie 'The King Maker' tried to rectify the problem using a combined system where Thais spoke Thai and foreigners spoke English, but with opposite subtitles for each. However, although that movie had some exceptional talent, it lacked the drive and foresight of Suriothai or Naresuan... Basically, any decent Thai movie with accurate subtitles should sell well outside of Thailand and there are hundreds of Baht outside, for every Baht inside the country... The more a film is aimed to a foreign audience, the more money it will make...

I was talking to an Italian woman who was married to a Thai for seven years and had a male child by him. She obtained a divorce from him because as a lover he was very unsatisfactory. In the next breath she also told me that she was rather horrified to be pressured by his mother and grandmother, to have oral sex with he infant son! She told me that they said it was the custom. This was later confirmed by two Englishmen who had male children by Thai women and who had discovered their wives giving their sons oral sex. They also said it was the custom. If this is true it goes a long way to explaining why Thai men are quite hostile to Thai women and treat them very badly. Of course the samples are very small and I have been trying to get some verification but with no luck so far. Imprinting an infant with that experience is quite damaging to that male and could if verified go a long was to explaining the Thai countries sexual attitudes. If you compare their attitudes to Bali for instance you will find that the sexual scheme is quite different. Prostitution is very rare among Balinese women although their economic situation is quite similar. Rayner

Loy Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

I think this article is biased in favor of Thailand and rather inaccurate. I live in Thailand, and I love the country and the culture, but there are some cold harsh facts that are either ignored or downplayed in this article. First of all, the Vietnam war had little to do with the growth of prostitution in Thailand. It certainly popularized prostitution aimed at foreigners, but this represents a very minute fraction of customers nation-wide. Prostitution has been an integral part of Thai society for as long as the society has existed, and it is unfair to blame this on foreign desire or influence. Even if a white man never set foot in this country, there would still be hookers everywhere. That brings me to another point - the numbers stated in this article are way too low. A 2004 study by Chulalongkorn University put an estimate of about 3 million sex workers in Thailand - that's around 5% of the population. The international perception of Thailand as a sex-for-sale haven exists for a reason - namely because it is true. There are a massively disproportionate amount of prostitutes in this country. However, to suggest that foreigners are the cause of this inherent cultural aspect of Thai society is simply unfair. Prostitution has always been very prevalent in Thai culture, and it always will be. Sad, but true.

Your statement that school is mandatory from ages 5 to 15 hides the truth that poor children with no money can't go to school!

The word Issan was coined to refer to Lao people living in Thailand who refused to assimilate into Thai culture. The Thai people refuse to use the word Lao in their language and so they coined the word Issan as both a region in Thailand and as a language. This way they don't have to use the word Lao. Stop brainwashing everyone to think that Issan is 'like' or 'similar' to Lao. They ARE Lao in ethnicity and language.
* Tue, 02 Dec 2008 09:20:26 GMT by lao.issan
The Lao people living in Issan are poor because the central government controls them. They are poor economically, but socially they are very rich. They maintain their Lao heritage and culture. Please make others aware that the Lao people in Issan are make to be poor so to keep them in control.

Laura, have a look at the drawing at the bottom of the page http://franco-thai.com/bouddhisme.php to see how Thai monks wear Buddhist robes.
* Wed, 01 Oct 2008 21:46:28 GMT by Laura Wright
hi i'm a RE teacher and the school has a buddhist robe, we'd love to get the children to try it on and experience it, but we do not know exactly how it should be worn - any guidance would be great thanks.
