SHA LO TUNG

The Sha Lo Tung area is situated in the northeastern New Territories. It has diverse types of habitats including grasslands, abandoned agricultural paddies, woodlands and freshwater systems. Sha Lo Tung is a unique area for dragonfly species, birds and plants.

Cheung Uk village (沙螺洞張屋) is located in Sha Lo Tung, Tai Po, New Territories is classified as Grade II monument.

There are three villages in Sha Lo Tung, i.e. Cheung Uk, Lei Uk and Lo Wai. Cheung Uk is the largest and most well-preserved village. It has more than 300 years old of history.

Cheung Uk village area is now abandoned, except one house where fierce dogs are barking. Two old people still live there.

The Cheung Uk ancestor hall is still used for worshipping as recent incense sticks can be found inside.

The Sha Lo Tung area has, since the late 1970s, been proposed to be turned into a golf course. Since the early 1990's, large-scale residential developments have been proposed at Sha Lo Tung, which would have major and dramatic ecological impacts on the area.

The Sha Lo Tung area is surrounded by, but excluded from, Pat Sin Leng country park. It is a natural breeding ground for dragonflies and damselflies.

The Sha Lo Tung area has also been subject to degradation due to the deliberate setting of fires and use by off-road vehicles.

Other than dragonflies and damselflies, Sha Lo Tung is also a rich site for birds and small animals.

Sha Lo Tung is famous for its Fung Shui Wood. It includes many different kinds of trees and shrubs.

A long-running controversy over plans to turn village land into a golf course resulted in the village being sold to developers.

Cheung Uk village is of old Hakka style and built along the mountains. All the houses are arranged horizontally and joined together.
