Sheung Wan is an area located in the north-west of Hong Kong Island. It is part of the Central and Western District.

Sheung Wan is famous for its small Chinese-style shops selling dried
seafood and medicinal herbs.

Sheung Wan is a traditional area with a long history. The development of Chinese medicine goes back to over 100 years with many shops selling Chinese medicine but also preserved marine products, birds nests and other medicinal stuff.

The area around Sheung Wan and Sai Yin Pun is an interesting place to explore. It
is packed with shops selling herbs, dry food, tea, bird's nest, snakes.

In year 2007 a statue of Shen Nong - the "god of Chinese medicine" - was unveiled to mark the opening of the Chinese Herb Garden in Sheung Wan.

Many traditional old Chinese Buildings still remain in the area around Sheung Wan and
Sai Yin Pun. It is worth a walk around and observing the local life style.

Shophouse architecture is a building typology that is both native and unique to urban Asia. It is characterized in terms of accommodating diverse functions. Shophouses can still be found in many Hong Kong districts. They can take various forms and are flexible in their use.

Sheung Wan area is well known for maintaining a strong Chinese cultural characteristic
with dried-food and spice markets, curiosity shops, temples and gardens.

The Western District is often viewed and characterized by derelict buildings and traditional shopping.

Sheung Wan is not a very touristic area but it is quite old and has many old
buildings. Many Chinese medecine shops can be found here. Local people still lay herbs and
medicine on the ground so it can be dried on sunny days.

MTR is proposing to build the West Island Line (from Sheung Wan to Kennedy Town). It is subject to approvals but this new line would be completed by 2012.

The Hong Kong Vocational Centre provides an English- speaking educational programme
for adults with learning disabilties - also a respite and residential facility, which helps
to achieve independence and developement of their own potential and opportunites within the
community.

It is also the oldest surviving market building in the city.
This building was built in 1906. It operated as a food market until 1988.
In 1990, it was declared a historical monument and the renovated market re-opened as
the Western Market in 1991.

This old "Lock Cha" Tea Shop sells Chinese teas of an infinite variety.
The shophouses or "tong Lau" are a mixture of Chinese and Western architectural features.
